Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980-83 was a 1983 environmental artwork in which artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude surrounded an island archipelago in Miami with pink fabric. NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is thrilled to announce that it is now "Home to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Surrounded Islands." The museum will premiere its first exhibition of this transformative gift from the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation in February 2025, which includes over 43 preparatory drawings and collages created by Christo, as well as photographs and photo murals.

In May of 1983, Christo and Jeanne-Claude encircled 11 manmade uninhabited islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay with 6.5 million square feet of floating, pink, woven polypropylene fabric "I had visited Miami earlier, and was very influenced by the flatness and horizontality of the landscape; also the way earth and water mix gently here", said Christo more than three decades ago. As with Christo and Jeanne-Claude's previous art projects, Surrounded Islands was entirely financed by the artists, through the sale of preparatory drawings, collages, and early works.
